Liberty Media, właściciel Formuły 1, jest bliskie przejęcia MotoGP, a kwota zakupu może sięgnąć 4 miliardów dolarów amerykańskich. Według informacji “Motorsport.com” zarówno Liberty Media, jak i Dorna Sports (obecny promotor MotoGP) chcieli sfinalizować cały proces już kilka tygodni temu.

Pierwotnie ogłoszenie przejęcia planowano przy okazji Grand Prix Kataru, rozpoczynającego sezon. Proces wstrzymały jednak zastrzeżenia Komisji Europejskiej i urzędu ds. konkurencji. Rzekomo jedna strona przyszłego porozumienia chciała kontynuować działania, druga wolała poczekać na rozstrzygnięcie Unii Europejskiej.

Z kolei Financial Times zapewnił, że sprawa jest przesądzona i zakup można uznać za dokonany. Natomiast Business Daily zaznacza, że ewentualny brak analizy pod kątem przepisów związanych z ochroną konkurencji mógłby być zaskakujący.

Liberty Media nie była jedynym podmiotem zainteresowanym zakupem MotoGP. W grę wchodził także państwowy fundusz inwestycyjny Qatar Sports Investments oraz TKO, konsorcjum z branży medialnej.
